ISLE OF PALMS, SC (WCSC) - An investigation into Monday's shooting at Isle of Palms that resulted in the temporary closure of the County Park has determined the victim accidentally shot himself, according to authorities.

Officers with the Isle of Palms Police Department responded to Isle of Palms County Park around 3:47 p.m. for reports of a shooting. Police arrived to find the victim, identified as Antonio Quantico Davis, with a gunshot wound to his left leg.

The North Charleston resident reportedly told police he had been shot by another person. Investigators say Davis was taken to MUSC, where he later changed his story, admitting that he accidentally shot himself.

According to a release, Davis told investigators he arrived at the county park as a passenger in a vehicle. He claims he was handling a pistol when he accidentally shot himself in the leg.

Police say the vehicle, which contained the pistol, fled the scene before officers arrived.

Isle of Palms County Park was shut down Monday afternoon while authorities conducted their investigation. At 4:30 p.m., the gates into the lot had been closed and police were on the scene directing motorists.

The Isle of Palms Police Department along with Charleston EMS responded to the scene.

No word at this time on potential charges Davis will be facing.
