FOLLY BEACH, SC (WCSC) - Thousands of beach goers took advantage of the beautiful weather this Memorial Day weekend by going to Folly Beach.

The people and the businesses who call Folly home are pleased that people can move in and out more easily and safely now that all lanes are opened on the Folly bridges.

The two bridges people cross to get to Folly Beach have been under construction for two years.

"Living off of the island, it was awful," Jude Gelber said of the construction.

It was a construction project that caused headaches for commuters.

"Memorial Day last year, it was about an hour, an hour and forty-five minutes to get on the beach," she said.

Now that all lanes are open, beachgoers and day trippers are finding it much easier – and quicker – to enjoy Folly Beach this Memorial Day Weekend.

Sgt. Kenneth Cross says there is a lot of tourists and locals spending time at Folly on Memorial Day. He says there has been some traffic delays getting to Folly Beach, but says the two bridges have been able to handle the increase.

"Do be aware there is a lot of people," he urges commuters. "Not only vehicles, but the foot traffic. Be very aware of your cross walks."

He also says the new sidewalks on the bridges are great for cyclists and those walking to the beach.
