JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Personnel from the Air Force Wildland Fire Center and Joint Base Charleston are conducting a prescribed fire Monday at Marrington Plantation.
The managed burn is scheduled to begin at approximately 11:30 a.m. and continue through 5:30 p.m., according to a release from the base.
"A prescribed fire is not a wildfire," 2nd Lt. Alexandrea Trobe said in a statement. "It is a managed burn, conducted by trained natural resources professionals. These fires are coordinated with the South Carolina Forestry Commission and with federal and municipal fire departments."
Authorities rely on prescribed fires to reduce natural fuel loads in wooded areas, enhance timber and wildlife habitat, restore ecosystems and suppress forest diseases and pests.
Before calling 911 to report a fire, you can verify whether smoke you are seeing is part of the prescribed burn at the base by calling (843) 764-7555.
