Heavy rains knock out power, flood downtown Charleston streets

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

Powerful thunderstorms continue to make their way across Charleston early Wednesday morning, resulting in street closures and power outages.

According to the Charleston Police Department, the following road is closed due to flooding:

  • Ashley Avenue between Fishburne Street and Sumter Street

The overnight thunderstorms brought heavy rains and wind gusts reaching 35 miles-per-hour.

The rain resulted in flooding along several downtown Charleston streets, including Hagood Avenue, Fishburne Street, President Street, and Kennedy Street. Those roads remained passable. 

In addition to the flooding, SCE&G is reporting nearly 600 customers lost power overnight in Charleston County, with crews still working to restore many of those outages. Click here to see the SCE&G Outage Map
