COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Emergency officials say a father and son who were clearing out land in Yemassee unearthed an explosive device Monday afternoon.

Officials with the Colleton County Sheriff's Office say deputies responded to the 6400 block of Low Country Highway for a suspicious device.

A man told authorities that he and his son had been using heavy equipment to clear vacant property that he owned.

The man said as they were using a mini excavator, an unknown object was unearthed. A report states the object appeared to be a PVC pipe with end caps and a small hole on one end.

Bomb technicians from the Charleston County Sheriff's Office along with members of the Colleton County Fire and Rescue Department also responded.

CCFR officials reported that a robot was used to survey the scene, and an explosive's specialist in full gear rigged equipment to disable the pipe bomb.

No injuries were reported.
