CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A 50-year-old North Charleston man is behind bars accused of robbing and kidnapping a woman in downtown Charleston.
The Charleston Police Department arrested Anthony McClain and charged him with armed robbery, kidnapping and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.
McClain was taken into custody Wednesday on Rivers Avenue by Charleston and North Charleston police. He was being held in the Al Cannon Detention Center.
Police say the incident happened on June 2 around 12:45 a.m. when the suspect approached the victim in front of 76 Cannon Street, pointed a handgun at her and demanded money.
A police report states the victim gave the suspect her money, and he then made the victim get in her car and pointed the handgun at her head.
According to investigators, the suspect made the victim drive him to multiple locations in Charleston and North Charleston. At one of the locations in North Charleston, police say the suspect took the keys from the vehicle and left her inside of the vehicle.
The victim was able to access a spare key in her vehicle and she was able to escape.
The investigation is continuing.
