CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - It's that time of year again for Live 5 Night at the RiverDogs!

Come join the Live 5 gang at The Joe on Saturday, June 20, for the Larry Doby Heritage Weekend game and watch our own Charleston RiverDogs take on the Asheville Tourists. The game starts at 6:00 p.m., but gates open at 5:00 p.m. and the first thousand people receive free Larry Doby replica jerseys so arrive early.

Also happening on game night. the book Baseball, The RiverDogs, & The Life of Larry Doby will make its debut.

Playing in both the Negro leagues and Major League Baseball, the South Carolina baseball legend was the first player to go directly to the majors from the Negro leagues, joining Jackie Robinson in breaking the MLB color barrier.

He went on to help the Cleveland Indians win a franchise-record 111 games and the AL pennant in 1954, finished second in the AL Most Valuable Player award voting and was the AL's RBI leader and home run champion.

The book discusses the positive impact the Camden native had on breaking the baseball color line.

You can purchase the book for $21.95, which includes two RiverDogs game tickets and a teacher lesson plan for classroom use aligned with Social Studies standards. Order your advanced copy here.
