Cast of 'Southern Charm' raising money for Tyreik Gadsden through GoFundMe

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The cast of the television show 'Southern Charm' has created a GoFundMe account to help raise funds for Tyriek Gadsden, the 5-year-old boy who was shot in downtown Charleston.

According to a press release, Rep. Wendell Gilliard reached out to the cast and requested that they consider using their notoriety to help raise money for Gadsden's medical expenses.

Officials with the Charleston County Legislative Delegation said Cameran Wimberly-Eubanks, with the assistance of her fellow cast members, created the GoFundMe page.

Tyreik was left paralyzed following a shooting on May 22 in the area of Mary and America Streets while outside his grandmother's home. It was the day of his kindergarten graduation.

The 5-year-old boy was struck in the back by gunfire, leaving him paralyzed from waist down.

A man was also shot in the leg and suffered minor injuries, police say.

According to the National Action Network, bullet fragments that remain lodged in Tyreik's spine have caused an infection resulting in meningitis.

Officials said on Thursday doctors reported that Tyreik, who is receiving specialized treatment at a hospital in North Carolina, is having headaches and trouble sitting up.

Tyreik's family says that despite the diagnosis, the young boy has remained in good spirits.

Calvin Brown, Jr. was arrested on June 5 for the shooting. He's charged with two counts of attempted murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.

His bond was set at $2.5 million.
