NORTH CHARLESTON (WCSC) - Prayer event, The Response, didn't draw a capacity crowd at the North Charleston Coliseum, but hundreds across many denominations filed into the building for a day of prayer and fasting for America.
Coliseum officials were expecting attendees to fill at 13,000 seats, but saw nearly half the facility occupied into the morning session.
Governor Nikki Haley was among them, despite criticism from the American Civil Liberties Union, which questioned whether taxpayer money was used to promote her attendance.
The group filed an open records request to the Governor's office, and sought a response within 15 business days.
Haley made no mention of her critics, but addressed the room for several minutes, also leading a prayer.
"We will never apologize for prayer in our state and in our country," she said.
Before leaving, ministers attending the event led the room in prayer on Haley's behalf.
Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal was also among those in attendance.
