JAMES ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - Charleston County Council has picked the future site of the new James Island library.
According to Charleston County council member Joe Qualey, council voted 6-3 for the Baxter Patrick location on South Grimball Road.
People in the community and council members had opposing views on the location.
James Island community members sent out a survey and polled 302 people. The results:
- 75% favored old Bi-Lo building
- 19% favored Dills Bluff on land owned by the Public Service District
- 6% favored Baxter Patrick, on South Grimball Road, owned by CCSD
The 75% of people who favored the old Bi-Lo site said they liked its accessibility and central location. They also felt it would be a good use of unused space.
Charleston County council favors a different location.
Qualey says he'd like to see the new library built at Dills Bluff, near Camp Road. Right now, that parcel is owned by PSD.
Qualey said Charleston County was trying to purchase that land from PSD and were hoping to enter negotiations Tuesday. Instead PSD has asked for a deferral in the decision.
