Fundraiser planned for Hollywood man shot by CCSO deputy

CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - A fundraiser is planned for a Hollywood man who was shot and wounded by a Charleston County Sheriff's deputy last month.

The National Action Network announced Tuesday morning the fundraiser for Bryant Heyward will be held Saturday at Wesley United Methodist Church in Hollywood.

Heyward is paralyzed from the shooting, according to his family.

They say money raised will be used to transfer Heyward to a rehabilitation center in Atlanta, Georgia.

The incident occurred while deputies were responding to the house, located in the 5900 block of Scott White Road, for reports of a home invasion and shots fired into the residence.

According to an incident report, a deputy was in the backyard when he saw the backdoor swing open and a man, later identified as Heyward, standing inside with a gun. The deputy did not know at the time Heyward was the homeowner.

Investigators said Heyward was shot because he refused to drop his gun when ordered to do so.

Two men are charged with attempted murder in connection with the home invasion.
