ORANGEBURG, SC (AP) -

A company that helps build the coverings for the compartments for the engines for Boeing jets is opening a new plant in Orangeburg County.

GKN Aerospace said in a news release Wednesday that the company is building a second plant in Orangeburg to make what are called inlet lip skips for the Boeing 737 MAX and 777X.

It hopes to have the new plant up and running by 2016 and hire about 75 people.

Company officials say GKN will develop the design for the coverings at its Camarillo, California, location, then send them to be made in South Carolina.

GKN makes a number of components for jet airplanes and employs about 12,000 people around the world.
