CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Friends, family and colleagues gathered in the Charleston County Public Library on to honor the life of Cynthia Hurd.
Hurd, who would've celebrated her 55th birthday Sunday, was among nine people shot and killed Wednesday inside Emanuel AME Church on Calhoun Street.
She worked in the Charleston County Public Library system for 31 years, most recently as manager at St. Andrews Regional Library.
Police arrested the accused killer, 21-year-old Dylann Roof, in Shelby, NC early Thursday morning. Roof is now facing nine murder charges and one count of possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.
In the county library Friday, just footsteps away from the fatal shooting scene, Hurd's brother Malcolm Graham stood before the room filled with family and friends to declare a celebration of his sister's life.
"She was not a victim," he said.
"She was a Christian. She was a soldier, she was a warrior," he continued.
Graham said the family is still grieving, but finds comfort knowing Hurd spent her final moments in church.
