MT. PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - Mount Pleasant Mayor Linda Page led a press conference Tuesday, calling for the removal of the Confederate Flag from the State House grounds.

The conference was held at 9:30 am at Waterfront Park.

Mayor Page was joined by many Lowcountry leaders who echoed the need for action for the flag's removal. Among the group were: Summerville Mayor Bill Collins, Sullivans Island Mayor Pat O'Neil, Representative Chip Limehouse, Charleston City Councilmember Mike Seekings, Awendaw Mayor Miriam Green and other others.

Former South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford sent a statement supporting the efforts to remove the flag.

Officials took the podium, expressing need for the Confederate Flag's relocation.

Mt. Pleasant's welcome sign includes a Moultrie Camp #27 badge featuring the Confederate Flag. The town has not yet responded to its plans for this sign.

Berkeley County legislators passed a resolution Monday urging state legislators to remove the flag from the State House.
