MARION COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – Hundreds gathered as the late Senator Clementa Pinckney was laid to rest at St. James AME Church cemetery in Marion County on Friday, June 26, 2015, in a place he considered his second home.

“You can see from all the crowds, that everybody loved Clementa,” said Mary Jones, a friend who attended school with Sen. Pinckney.

In the hours leading up to his burial, dozens of Sen. Pinckney's admirers assembled and waited patiently.

“Just hearing him and all of the things that he had done in his young life and I just wanted to be a part of if,” Shirley Wiggins said.

Sen. Pinckney is buried beside his mother and grandmother.

"There's nothing that he would of course want more than be laying next to his family," said Timothy Johnson Sr., a pastor at St. James AME Church, a place Pinckney's family attended.

Pinckney spent most of his life elsewhere in South Carolina, but those closest to him say his heart was here in Marion County. They say he loved God first, and family second... and family was right here.

"Many times we forget about people, he remembered his grandmother, he remembered the teaching, and he remembered that he was there to serve those who did not have a voice to go around here and speak,” said Johnson Sr.

"He remembered Marion County, and you needed something and you called him, he would do it the best that he could, to make certain that you could get it."

One promise Pinckney will never be able to fulfill is to dedicate the same church he visited so many times.

St. James AME recently moved to a new building, and Pinckney promised he wouldn't miss the dedication.

Now the closest he will get is a mile down the road.

"He will be missed... and it will take a long time for someone to fill those large shoes of his."

So as time will go on, friends say Pinckney will be remembered for two things; his love for family and God. His final resting place couldn't make that any more true.
