Benefitfocus latest to donate $100,000 to Mother Emanuel Hope Fund

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Charleston-based Benefitfocus will be donating $100,000 to the Mother Emanuel Hope Fund. The company announced the donation Friday morning as the City of Charleston prepares for the funeral of the Reverend Clementa Pinckney.

In a statement from Benefitfocus, the company says it began fundraising last week following the shootings, matching $2 for every $1 donated by its associates. It plans to continue the fundraising effort in the coming week.

The CEO of Benefitfocus released the following statement:

"The families of the victims, the Mother Emanuel AME Church, and our entire community suffered an immeasurable loss, and the associates of Benefitfocus extend our deepest condolences to all those affected," Benefitfocus CEO Shawn Jenkins said. "We hope our support will help the families on their path to healing."

"We are thankful to be a part of an amazing community and are inspired by the compassion and generosity that everyone has shown to lift up our neighbors in such a time of need," Jenkins added.

Benefitfocus is the latest company to make a huge donation in the wake of the June 17 fatal mass shooting at Emanuel AME Church in downtown Charleston.

In the past several days, Wells Fargo, Boeing, SCE&G and the Carolina Panthers have also donated $100,000 to support the victims of the fatal shooting. BlueCross BlueShield of SC donated $75,000, and will match employee contributions up to $25,000.
