Myrtle Beach officials call on SC to lower Confederate flag

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) - Tourism officials in Myrtle Beach are calling for removal of the Confederate flag from the grounds of the South Carolina Statehouse.

The board of directors for the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce voted Monday that the flag should be removed and be placed in what the resolution called "an appropriate historical display."

Calls for removing the flag have increased since nine black parishioners were shot and killed at Emmanuel AME Church in Charleston earlier this month.

Chamber president and CEO Brad Dean said the vote reaffirms the chamber's desire to promote unity throughout the state. Myrtle Beach is the center of the state's $18 billion tourism industry.

State lawmakers have agreed to debate removing the flag.
