Daniel Island Community Foundation raises $121k for Mother Emanuel Hope Fund

Officials say the Daniel Island Community Foundation has helped raise more than $121,000 for the Mother Emanuel Hope Fund.

"In the days following the June 17th shooting, the Foundation issued a challenge grant pledging to match the first $50,000 donated by island residents and businesses," read a statement from Daniel Island officials."In total, more than $50,000 was raised in less than two weeks, and the Daniel Island Community Foundation will be presenting a check to the Mother Emanuel Hope Fund for at least $121,000 in the coming weeks."

According to officials, Daniel Island-led efforts have collectively raised more than $300,000 in support of the families affected by the Mother Emanuel tragedy. 

Officials released the following statement on Thursday: 

The Daniel Island Community Foundation is pleased to announce that it has helped raised more than $121,000 for the Mother Emanuel Hope Fund that the City of Charleston established in the wake of the recent tragedy at Charleston’s Mother Emanuel AME church. In the days following the June 17th shooting, the Foundation issued a challenge grant pledging to match the first $50,000 donated by island residents and businesses. In total, more than $50,000 was raised in less than two weeks, and the Daniel Island Community Foundation will be presenting a check to the Mother Emanuel Hope Fund for at least $121,000 in the coming weeks.  

The donation from the Daniel Island Community Foundation represents just a portion of a significant outpouring of financial support from Daniel Island residents and businesses. BenefitFocus, which is headquartered on Daniel Island, recently announced a $100,000 donation to the Mother Emanuel Hope Fund. Blackbaud, also headquartered on the island, donated $5,000 to the Mother Emanuel Hope Fund and $75,000 to the Lowcountry Unity Fund, and made a commitment to match up to an additional $25,000 of employee donations.

Other fundraising events and donation efforts on Daniel Island have included lemonade and treat stands set up by children living on the island, as well as funds raised by the Daniel Island Flying Fish swim team, the Charleston Battery, the Daniel Island Shuttle, Peace Love and Hip Hop, and the Music Battery.

To date the collective fundraising efforts by the Daniel Island Community Foundation, Daniel Island businesses, organizations and residents total over $314,000.

“There has been just an overwhelming outpouring of support from our community,” said Jane Baker, administrator of the Daniel Island Community Foundation and Vice President of Community Services for the Daniel Island Property Owners’ Association. “We are so fortunate to live and work in a community that makes giving back to our neighbors in need a priority.”

The Daniel Island Community Foundation is a private foundation that has been established as a means for Daniel Island citizens and others to make contributions in support of local non-profit organizations.
