West Ashley: Coroner identifies victim in early morning shooting

The Charleston County Coroner has identified the victim in Tuesday's early morning shooting as Demeatrius Raynard Smalls.

Deputies say Smalls, 28, was shot dead just after midnight Tuesday on Hazelwood Dr. in West Ashley, near the Citadel Mall.

A representative with the Sheriff's Office says they were called to investigate a report of shots heard in the area around 12:17 a.m. Soon after, Smalls showed up to St. Francis Hospital with two gunshot wounds. Deputies say he was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Witnesses tell deputies they saw the victim with a male and female in a car that was parked on Hazelwood Dr. The two men got out of the car to meet with unknown subjects on the 1900-block of Hazelwood Dr. They say the victim was shot shortly after.

The fatal shooting is being investigated by the Charleston County Sheriffs Office.
