COLUMBIA, SC (WCSC) - The Confederate flag is set to be taken down from its place on the State House grounds Friday at 10 a.m.
Gov. Nikki Haley plans to sign bill S.897 Thursday at 4 p.m. on the second floor lobby of the State House. The bill calls for the flag to come down within 24 hours of Haley's signature.
"I am so thankful to the South Carolina House for it's vote in support of my bill to retire the Confederate Battle Flag," said Democrat State Sen. Vincent Sheheen, from Camden. "When Bakari Sellers and I stood on the Statehouse grounds a year ago and publicly called for this to happen, I never doubted this day would eventually come."
The South Carolina House approved the Senate bill shortly after 1 a.m. Thursday after 13 hours of debate over a series of amendments proposed for the bill.
