CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Thirteen candidates filed to run for the senate seat left opened by the fatal shooting of State Sen. and Rev. Clementa Pinckney.
The candidates who have filed are Chauncey Barnwell, William Bowman, Jr., Sheree Darien, Kent Fletcher, Libbie Henry Green, Kenneth Hodges, Keith Horton, Margie Bright Matthews, Richmond Truesdale, John Edward Washington, Korey Williams, Leilani Bessenger and Alberto Fernandez.
Filing for the District 45 seat closed on Monday.
Pinckney was one of nine people killed on June 17 when a gunman opened fire after a Bible study at the Mother Emanuel AME Church in downtown Charleston.
A special primary for the vacant seat is scheduled for Sept. 1
If necessary, a runoff would be held Sept. 15 with the special election set for Oct. 20.
