WALTERBORO, SC (WCSC) - Authorities have found a box containing the funeral ashes of a couple that were in a car stolen over the weekend in Walterboro.

The ashes of a Florida woman's parents were inside a rental car stolen just after midnight Saturday. But when the car was found on Stokes Bridge Road in Dorchester County on Sunday, the box containing the ashes were missing.

Investigators found the box Monday afternoon near the area where the car was found in Dorchester County, according to Walterboro Police spokesperson Amye Stivender.

Police say the family's ordeal began as the woman was unloading contents of her vehicle shortly after midnight Saturday at a hotel in the 1,400 block of Sniders Highway, where a man forced his way into her room, assaulted her and grabbed her purse. The man then ran outside, got into her rental vehicle and fled the scene, Stivender said.

The victim, who is from Tampa, was traveling through South Carolina and bound for Massachusetts were the ashes are to be interred next week. according to her niece. Stivender said police are working on arrangements to return the ashes to the family.
