"A Cause to Celebrate" at annual Charleston Pride Festival

CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - The 6th annual Charleston Pride Festival kicks off eight days of events from Saturday, July 25 to Saturday, August 1. Charleston's annual celebration of unity and equal rights among the LGBT community will feature eighteen events during the week, beginning with a roller derby bout in North Charleston and wrap up with a party in downtown Charleston.

The festival theme, "A Cause to Celebrate!" is in response to the Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage earlier this year. Jim Obergefell, the leading plaintiff in the Supreme Court case will be the Celebrity Grand Marshall. Also in celebration of marriage equality, the festival will feature Charleston's first wedding showcase supporting LGBT weddings.

Charleston Mayor Joe Riley and Charleston County council declared July 25 to August 1 as "Charleston Pride Festival Week." Other highlights include a panel discussion on LGBTQ History, Pride Night with the Riverdogs, and the Charleston Pride Parade and Rally.
