CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

A U.S. District judge sentenced a Charleston man to 30 months in prison for possession of child pornography.

Daniel Maguire III, age 71, was also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $8,000 and a mandatory $100 special assessment fee, and will face a lifetime term of supervised release, according to Asst. U.S. Attorney Dean Secor.

Evidence presented at a change of plea hearing established an undercover FBI agent was able to access files of child pornography being shared on the internet by a peer-to-peer software user located in Charleston.

FBI agents were able to trace the IP address to Maguire's home in Charleston, where they executed a federal search warrant and seized two computers and an external hard drive, Secor said in a release.

A forensic examination of the devices uncovered thousands of still images and videos of child pornography, including still images and videos of prepubescent minors engaging in sexually explicit conduct, he said.

The case was part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide Department of Justice initiative to combat child exploitation and abuse, Secor said.
