Berkeley County passes budget; No taxes going up

BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Berkeley County has passed its budget, and taxes will not be going up.

Also staying the same, water and sanitation rates.

However, it did include changes to the county's fee in lieu of taxes revenue which is a fee some businesses pay each year on land instead of taxes.

On Monday night, County Council changed the percentage of that fee that goes to the Berkeley County school district from 80 to 70 percent.

According to Interim Superintendent Mike Turner, the changes means the district will get 560 thousand dollars less next year.

In a statement Turner said, "We do not need this kind of blatant 'back door' maneuver, especially after the district finished its budget."
