HAMPTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - A 40-year-old woman was arrested after investigators say she burned down a farm and multiple vehicles in Hampton County.
Christine Linnean James of Hampton is charged with arson, and was given a $150,000 bond.
James' charge stems from a fire that destroyed a farm house and multiple vehicles causing an estimated $198,930 worth of damage.
On Wednesday afternoon, a Hampton County deputy responded to property on Gilbert Lane in Varnville.
A witness told the deputy he drove up to the location because he wanted to check on the victim's property.
He said as he drove up he noticed James walking away from a burning house.
An incident report states James told the witness she had just called the fire department.
The Hampton fire chief reported that as he was fighting the fire, James came out of nowhere and said she burned everything up, but let the animals out of their cages.
The deputy said when he spotted James standing next to another deputy, her legs were covered in dirt and burned wood residue.
According to investigators, James told the deputy she burned down the house and two sheds, but did not kill any animals.
The Colleton County Fire-Rescue Department, who also responded to the fire, reported that responders found several structures burning including a loaded hay barn, vehicles, farm implements, tractors, dog kennels and several acres of fields and woods.
The Hampton County Sheriff's Office is investigating.
