Officials: One missing, presumed dead after Wadmalaw house fire

WADMALAW, SC - Charleston County deputies say one person is unaccounted for and presumed dead after a fire was fought at a Wadmalaw Island home Tuesday morning.

Charleston County dispatchers say emergency responders were called to a home on the 2600 block of Boy Scout Rd. off of Maybank Highway at 2:45 a.m.

Firefighters from St. Johns, the City of Charleston and James Island responded, in addition to the Charleston County Sheriff's Office.

A representative with the Sheriff's Office says the home was fully engulfed in flames when deputies arrived on scene. He says there were two people inside the home at the time of the fire, but only one was able to escape. Deputies believe the person who was not able to escape is deceased inside the residence, but have not been able to confirm it because of how badly burnt the structure is.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by St. Johns Fire Department, SLED, the Charleston County Sheriff's Office, and the Charleston County Coroner's Office.

The Charleston County Coroner will identify the victim.
