CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

The Charleston County Coroner's Office has identified a 72-year-old woman who died in a house fire on Wadmalaw Island.

Authorities say Loretta Brown died at her home from smoke inhalation.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating the incident.

The fire happened on Tuesday at 2:45 a.m. when emergency crews responded to a home on the 2600 block of Boy Scout Rd. off of Maybank Highway.

Firefighters from St. Johns, the City of Charleston and James Island responded, in addition to the Charleston County Sheriff's Office.

A representative with the Sheriff's Office said the home was fully engulfed in flames when deputies arrived on scene.

According to authorities, there were two people inside the home at the time of the fire, but only one was able to escape. At the time of the incident, deputies believed the person who was not able to escape was dead inside the residence, but were not able to confirm it because of how badly burnt the structure was.
