Charleston, SC (AP) -

Attorneys representing the man accused of killing nine people at a historic black church are being allowed to solely focus on his case.

A judge Friday made that determination for lawyers representing 21-year-old Dylann Roof. The judge also cleared calendars for state prosecutors handling the case, starting at the beginning of next year.

Roof faces state charges including nine counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder from the June 17 shooting at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston.

Roof's trial has been scheduled to begin next July, and prosecutors haven't said whether they'll seek the death penalty. He also faces dozens of federal charges, and his attorneys in that case have said Roof wants to plead guilty.
