Police on lookout for two suspects after Downtown store owner beaten, robbed

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

Charleston police are on the lookout for two men, suspected of assaulting and robbing the owner of 2 Brothers grocery store, on Wentworth Street.

The store owner says the first suspect came into the store asking for cigarettes.  When he asked the man for identification, another man ran into the store with a gun, demanding money from him.

The owner says the two men started beating him, and dragged him down an aisle into a back room. According to a police report, the victim was able to escape through a side entrance, and yelled for help.

A neighbor called police.

For the 2 Brothers owner, this wasn't the first time his store had been robbed, and says it happened almost four years ago.

He feared the entire neighborhood faced a high risk of crime, from what he described as poor lighting along the streets and sidewalks.

He's since taken part in neighborhood meetings to address the issue.
