Tropical Storm Ida picks up speed in Atlantic

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

Tropical Storm Ida continues to churn in the Atlantic, but it has picked up speed and made a slight change in direction.

At 5 p.m. Sunday, the center of Ida was located near latitude 18.4 North, longitude 46.3 West.

The system is moving toward the northwest near 17 mph. Forecasters expect a northwestward motion with a decrease in forward speed over the next 24 hours. Ida is forecast to become nearly stationary by Tuesday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 45 mph with higher gusts. Little change in strength is forecast during the next couple of days. Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 175 miles, mainly to the east of the center.

Live 5 forecaster Jordan Wilkerson says current models continue to show no threat to land.
