Report: Cleaning lady steals $50k worth of jewelry from Edisto Beach resort

EDISTO BEACH, SC (WCSC) - A 47-year-old cleaning lady is behind bars and accused of stealing $50,000 worth of jewelry from a resort in Edisto Beach.

The Edisto Beach Police Department arrested Aponda Middleton of Walterboro and charged her with grand larceny of more than $10,000.

According to Chief George Brothers, Middleton was employed with a cleaning service which works at the Wyndham Ocean Ridge Resort on Edisto Beach.

Brothers said on July 19, Middleton entered a residential unit and removed over fifty pieces of jewelry belonging to a visiting family from Ohio.

The jewelry was valued at approximately $50,000.

Chief Brothers said investigators have been working on the case since the theft and recently were able to locate jewelry from the incident at area pawn shops; the jewelry had been pawned by Middleton.

"Over half of the jewelry was recovered from the pawn shops and additional pieces were recovered when investigators executed a search warrant at Ms. Middleton's home," officials with the Edisto Beach PD said."Middleton was arrested and transported to the Colleton County Detention Center where she is awaiting a bond hearing."

According to Brothers, excellent work and diligence on the part of the investigators led to the recovery of the items and the arrest of Middleton.

Brothers said "We are very happy that we were able to recover these items for the victim.  Many of them had not only great monetary value, but sentimental value as well."
