MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - Spectators gathered in Mount Pleasant to watch people "running scared" in the annual Zombie Apocalypse 5K.

The event, held at Boone Hall Plantation, challenges runners to make their way through people made up to look like zombies.

Each runner started with three red "life flags" they wore around their waists and had the chance to win additional flags by competing challenges at multiple stations throughout the race course.

Some of the zombies were "on a feast," according to the rules, with the intent of taking runners' life flags. Other zombies were simply part of "the horde" and would not take flags; but runners have no way of knowing which are which and must avoid all to protect their flags, according to the event's official website.

Food and beverages were on hand for runners, zombies and spectators alike at the Ultimate Zombie Bash Party.
