CHARLESTON, SC - It is never too early to start planning your weekend! Our friends at The Southern Weekend are shining the spotlight on five great events going on throughout the Lowcountry this weekend that you definitely won't want to miss:
Ghosts and goblins will take up residency at Boone Hall Plantation beginning this weekend as Fright Nights kicks off its annual celebration of screams! Fright Nights will get underway Friday at dark, and will run every weekend through Halloween. Fear-seekers will get to make their way through several attractions, including the Wicked Woods Hayride, Zombie Town, Horror High, and Blackout. While Fright Nights is open to everyone, the attractions are not recommended for children under 12, or people who can't handle strobe lights, smoke machines, extreme darkness, or the sight of blood. Chefs from hospitals across South Carolina will compete Saturday to take home the crown as the 2015 Cooking Well Invitational Winner. This culinary showdown will be held at the Culinary Institute of Charleston Main Campus from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. In addition to the competition, there will also be cooking demonstrations, a food truck rodeo, and delicious food from the chefs themselves. Start your Saturday morning off on the right foot at the Oktoberfest 5K Run/Walk in Mt. Pleasant. This year's race takes place at Laurel Hill Plantation beginning at 9 a.m. Runners and walkers will take off on a 5K through the forest and make their way to the finish line, where an Oktoberfest celebration awaits. The After Race Party will include live music from a German band, as well as plenty of beer and brats. To top it all off, this year's 5K is in support of two great charities: Toys for Tots Bikes and Happy Feet.
The German-themed celebration continues Saturday with Oktoberfest at Bay Street Biergarten from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Throw back steins of German beer while enjoying live music all day long from Hans Schmidt, Tidal Jive, and Baggage Claim. There will also be multiple competitions throughout the day, including a Blind Bier Tasting and Stein Hoisting. And if you participated in the 5K earlier in the morning, make sure to bring in your race bib for a free $5 bier card that is good for a 20 oz. pour from Sam Adams.
Bay Creek Park will be the site of the 5th Annual Edisto Beach Shrimp Fest on Saturday, September 26 from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. This celebration of the fishing industry and its contributions to Edisto will include arts and crafts, shag lessons, a DJ, and live music from The Shem Creek Boogie Band. And of course, there will be plenty of food. Enjoy local seafood cooked up with recipes from Edisto, as well as burgers and hot dogs. Be sure to get there early as admission is FREE until 5 p.m., and $5 per person after that.
