JOHNS ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - More than 800 homes that were without power into Saturday following an EF-2 tornado that hit Johns Island and West Ashley Friday are back online, SCE&G says.
The utility had estimated power would be restored by 2 p.m. Saturday, but by 1 p.m., its outage map showed the outages had been restored.
St. Johns Fire Department officials said ten homes on Sonny Boy Lane suffered heavy damage when the storm came through early Friday morning. The twister ripped up trees, which in some cases brought down power lines with them.
Residents of the Simmons Creek neighborhood, who live only a few streets away from the worst damage, decided to make the best of a bad situation Friday night by throwing a block party when they were left without power.
SCE&G spokesman Patrick Flynn said customers in the area should continue to watch for downed power lines as crews continue efforts to repair damage from the tornado.
Anyone who spots a downed line should immediately report it by calling SCE&G's outage line at (888) 333-4465, Flynn said.
