CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

Charleston police have two men in custody in connection with an armed robbery at a Wentworth Street business.

Juwan Maurice Brown, 18, of Logan Street, is charged with armed robbery, assault and battery 1st degree and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. Akeem Theodore Simmons, 25, of North Grimball Road, is charged with armed robbery and assault and battery 1st degree.

The robbery occurred on Sept. 16 at about 8:42 p.m., according to police spokesman Charles Francis.

He said the victim was sitting in the rear of a store when a man entered through the front door and asked the victim the price of a pack of cigarettes. As the victim walked toward the man and the front of the store, another man entered the store armed with a handgun and demanded money, police say.

The victim was assaulted during the robbery and received minor injuries, and the suspects took money from the victim and left, Francis said.

Both men were being held in the Al Cannon Detention Center.
