Dorchester Co. coroner indicted, suspended from office

DORCHESTER COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Gov. Nikki Haley suspended Dorchester County Coroner Chris Nisbet from office Thursday after Nisbet was indicted on a charge of misconduct in office.

Nisbet was indicted in connection with a "civil disturbance" in which he pulled a gun on his neighbor.

The Summerville Police Department responded to a call in the area of Doty Park at 12:42 a.m. on Aug. 25 and found Nisbet on a street arguing with a second man. Nisbet had drawn a gun but it was pointed at the ground, according to an incident report.

Under state law he's not allowed to act as a deputy, so Summerville has asked for a SLED investigation. That evening, Nisbet said he welcomed the SLED investigation.

"I would rather SLED investigate me then me have to investigate a poor and working man getting killed in my neighbor's yard," Nisbet said.

On Sept. 11, a judge set a $5,000 personal recognizance bond for Nisbet, who had turned himself in to authorities on the misconduct charge.

This is a developing story. Check back for additional details.
