CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The American Red Cross is looking for volunteers to join its workforce in Charleston, Columbia and the Upstate as heavy rainfall and potential for flooding continues to threaten communities.
"When families across South Carolina need shelter, disaster relief and comfort, the Red Cross is there to help them," said Louise Welch Williams, regional chief executive officer of the American Red Cross in South Carolina. "We are asking people in the community to step up and help their neighbors in need by becoming a Red Cross disaster volunteer."
Officials say the Red Cross is especially in need of volunteers to be available to assist with opening and operating shelters as well as disaster assessment.
"Shelter volunteers provide a safe, warm, dry place for their neighbors during a disaster," Red Cross officials said."These volunteers assist with registration, setup of sleeping areas, feeding, and sharing of information."
According to officials, disaster assessment volunteers travel to areas affected by a disaster to review and assess the amount and severity of damage.
New volunteers can visit RedCross.org/SC and click on volunteer to start their application. For more information you can call 843-764-2323 x321.
