CONWAY, S.C. (AP) - Authorities are manning more than a dozen checkpoints near the Waccamaw River to let Horry County residents in, while keeping would-be looters out.

Horry County Police Lt. Raul Denis tells The Sun News of Myrtle Beach (http://bit.ly/1jg19kF ) that residents are being encouraged to collect small valuable items from their homes and tell checkpoint officers that their house is secure. Horry County Police, as well as Conway police officers and the National Guard are manning the checkpoints.

No criminal activity in the flood zones have been reported, but law enforcement officers say they are wary of looters who could be looking for a route into flooded neighborhoods.

At least 19 people were killed in South Carolina and North Carolina after days of heavy rain led to widespread flooding and breached dams.
