MONCKS CORNER, SC (WCSC) -

Authorities are searching for a man who shoplifted at a Walmart in Moncks Corner and escaped custody after he threatened to cut a loss prevention officer with a box cutter.

On Wednesday afternoon, officers responded to 511 N. Highway 52 in reference to a shoplifting.

Store officials said the whole thing started when a man was seen putting items in his pants and walking out of the store without paying for them. Authorities say the items were merchandise including a pencil, five paint markers and two vehicle decals valued at $30.

Store loss prevention officers made contact with the suspect outside of the business and recovered the items.

A report states as the officers attempted to escort the man to the loss prevention office, the man started fighting them and at one point bit one of the officers on the shoulder.

The two officers said they were able to contain the man inside the loss prevention office for a few minutes.

Authorities say when one of the officers stepped outside to call the police, the suspect pulled out what was described as a box cutter knife and told the officer that he was going to cut him.

The officer said he then backed away from the door for his own safety, and the suspect ran out of the business.

Police describe the suspect as a white male wearing a blue shirt, camo pants, a Gamecocks hat and tattoos on both arms. Authorities say the suspect dropped a pair of flip flops and sunglasses during the incident.

Witnesses say they saw the suspect, who had no shoes on, run towards a restaurant and attempt to jump a fence.

If you have any information you are asked to call police.
