CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Bond was set at $100,000 Friday morning for a motorcyclist charged in the death of his passenger, who also was his girlfriend.
Mau Tuala, 27, is charged with felony DUI and reckless homicide in the death of Ashley Spofford.
The Highway Patrol says Tuala was driving his motorcycle on Highway 78 Thursday morning when it collided with an SUV that was pulling out of a private residence.
Spofford, who was wearing a helmet, died at the scene. Tuala was hospitalized and then jailed.
After his bond hearing, Tuala's mom said Spofford was like a daughter to her and called her a "beautiful person."
Cherryl Tuala also said her son wishes he died instead of his girlfriend.
"He wishes it was him, it's killing him right now that he don't have her and that she was on the back of his bike. He feels like he wishes it was him that died instead of her," Cherryl Tuala said.
The Highway Patrol says it is waiting on toxicology tests to determine Mua Tuala's blood alcohol level.
He faces of up to 25 years if convicted of felony DUI and up to ten years if convicted of reckless homicide.
