Lowcountry survivors, supporters race for breast cancer cure

The sea of support ran nearly as long as the race route for the annual Komen Lowcountry Race for the Cure.

Saturday, thousands ran and walked the 5K from Family Circle Stadium on Daniel Island. The event set a fundraising goal of $500,000 for breast cancer awareness and research

One hundred percent of proceeds support the Susan G Komen mission, with seventy-five percent benefiting Lowcountry breast cancer health education and breast cancer screening and treatment programs.

The remaining twenty-five percent supports national grant programs.

According to Susan G. Komen Lowcountry, one in eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.

With early diagnosis the survival rate for cancer confined to the breast has increased from 74% in 1980 to a 99% rate of survival.
