WEST ASHLEY SC (WCSC) - The second phase of construction for the Highway 61 sidewalk project is underway.
This stage, budgeted at approximately $365,000, will continue the concrete sidewalk along Ashley River Road from Planters Trace Apartments to Magwood Road.
Charleston County already completed Phase 1, connecting William Kennerty Drive to the Planters Trace Apartments near the 1-526 overpass.
This project was approved by Charleston County Council as part of the annual allocation program.
"People go so fast, I think a sidewalk extension is going to be key," local Nikki Virtucio said. "I exercise along this area all the time, riding, biking. So I'm excited about it."
Charleston County said the project might require nighttime lane closures on Highway 61, as necessary, and only from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
A third phase of the sidewalk extension is being developed, with potential to reach Old Parsonage Road. That phase is still in the design and permitting stage.
