JOHNS ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - Crews continue work to improve drainage issues on Main Road, which has flooded several times over the last few months, in the hopes of preventing more flooding from happening again.
Traffic on Main Road heading onto Johns Island is moving smoothly Monday afternoon after intermittent lane closures on this road throughout the day as Department of Transportation crews finished installing a second pipe under the road.
A DOT official said there are now two 24-inch drainage pipes under Main Road. They are hoping this will keep it from flooding again.
Through the evening, more lane closures are planned as crews finish repaving the road.
SCDOT says they also plan to raise and widen the shoulders of Main Road for evacuation purposes.
In the coming months, Charleston County is said to be also doing some work on Main Road, including an attempt to raise the road by adding more layers of asphalt to further prevent flooding.
There is no timetable yet on when that work will begin.
