COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Five people from a Massachusetts church, who were returning from a mission trip, were injured in an accident in Colleton County over the weekend.
According to the Colleton County Fire and Rescue Department, the accident happened early Saturday morning on I-95 near the 41 mile marker and less than a mile from the county line.
CCFR officials say a minivan left the roadway at a high rate of speed, drove down an embankment and struck several trees.
When emergency crews got to the location they reported finding multiple people with traumatic injuries including a baby.
Rescue crews said they had to use special tools to remove the front passenger door, and several pieces of debris had to be forced free from around one person's legs before he could be taken from the van.
Two helicopters also responded to the scene.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
