DUNCAN, SC (AP) -

Figures released by the South Carolina Ports Authority say the economic impact of the state's ports on the Upstate is about $27 billion, about half of the total port impact statewide.

The figures from a University of South Carolina analysis released Wednesday also show one in every eight jobs in the Upstate is related to the ports.

The Ports Authority board was also told on Wednesday that container volume increased about 11 percent during the first quarter of the fiscal year that began last July.

The board also approved spending $1.25 million for continued planning on a Savannah River port the state is building with Georgia. The board also agreed to name its new North Charleston container terminal in honor of state Senate President Pro Tempore Hugh Leatherman of Florence.
