Cops: Summerville man behind bars after attempt to rob N. Charleston bank

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A Summerville man is behind bars after police say he attempted to rob a bank in North Charleston Friday afternoon.

The North Charleston Police Department arrested 29-year-old Jarrette Javette Singletary and charged him with entering a financial institution with the intent to steal and possession of crack cocaine.

Officers responded to the South Carolina Federal Credit Union at 1900 McMillan Avenue for a bank robbery in progress at 2:54 p.m.

Authorities say when officers arrived, the robbery was still happening.

Officers then encountered the suspect as he was exiting the bank, and he was taken into custody as he exited the business.

"Further investigation revealed that the suspect entered the bank and handed the teller a note stating that he needed $30,000.00," NCPD officials say." He then jumped over the counter in an effort to remove currency from the bank drawers."

According to police, the suspect was unable to access the drawers and then crossed back over the counter and began to exit the business when responding officers took him into custody.
