Charges upgraded against suspect in pregnant woman's fatal stabbing after infant dies

The charges being brought against a man suspected in the death of a pregnant woman and her infant have been updated after the baby died Sunday, police say.

Ricky Short, 26, now faces charges on two counts of murder and one count of possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime after pregnant Malakia Frazier of North Charleston died of stab wounds. An earlier charge of attempted murder was upgraded to murder after her baby, Miracle Frazier, died in intensive care weeks later.

A woman told investigators she was on her way home on Oct. 10 when she saw someone stabbing a woman lying in a driveway. She told officers she saw the man stab the woman two times.

Charleston County Deputy Coroner Dottie Lindsay says Frazier died less than an hour later at a hospital, where staff performed an emergency procedure to deliver the baby. The infant was placed in intensive care and died at MUSC Sunday at 7:49 p.m.

The suspect's bond hearing is set for 2 p.m. Monday.
