MONCKS CORNER, SC (WCSC) - The Moncks Corner Police Department charged a 16-year-old student at Berkeley High School on Tuesday with bringing a loaded gun to school.
Investigators say they received information from another student who saw the offender in possession of the firearm the previous day.
"School Resource Officers immediately removed the student from Berkeley High School where he attends," MCPD officials said."A search of his book bag revealed a loaded 357 revolver."
On Tuesday morning, police received a call from a school resource officer stating that he had a student in custody who had a firearm while in school.
The officer said the previous day another student witnessed the offender with a gun while riding home on the bus on Monday afternoon.
After receiving the witnesses' information Tuesday morning, school administration along with the school resource officer made contact with the student.
Police say the student admitted to having the gun on the bus on Monday.
According to a police report, a search of the student's bookbag led to the discovery of a "Rossi" .357 magnum containing four live rounds and one spent round.
Authorities say the firearm came back clear as not being stolen.
Officers say the offender's guardian said she did not have any idea who the gun belonged to or how the student obtained it.
The student was transported to the Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia.
An MCPD report states the student had been charged with weapons on school grounds, unlawful possession of a firearm and disturbing schools.
