MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - Mount Pleasant Mayor Linda Page and town council members joined together Tuesday to formally celebrate the grand opening of Billy Swails Boulevard.
The boulevard will connect Hamlin Road and Porchers Bluff Road in Mount Pleasant. According to the town's website, early design for the project began in 2006 but was put on hold due to lack of funding.
Now complete, the two-lane boulevard also features a biking and walking path. Page said the road is an important part of the town's infrastructure improve plan, and Swails is deserving of the dedication.
"He's a humble man and has a great family," Page said. "I'm honored to serve behind him."
The boulevard borders the Sweetgrass School campus, where both Laing Middle and Jennie Moore Elementary schools reside. Jennie Moore's principal Karen Felder said the boulevard is key for the campus and its 2,000 students. Without this road, she said traveling to school each day would become a nightmare.
Swails served on Mount Pleasant Town Council for 12 years, and was elected mayor in 2009. He decided in 2013 not to seek re-election.
